Last Minute Trade
The Maine Mariners and Wheeling Nailers struck a deal on Wednesday prior to the 3 p.m. deadline for the Season Opening Roster. The Mariners acquired defenseman Zachary Massicotte in exchange for defenseman Cole Cameron and future considerations. Massicotte, 25, is entering his third season in the league. He’s scored eight goals and added 20 assists for 28 points in 96 games with the Allen Americans and Orlando Solar Bears.
IR/Reserve
Brad Arvanitis (G) (Reserve)- There’s no surprise as the Mariners are getting a lot of help from the Providence Bruins as both Ryan Bischel and Nolan Maier were sent down to Maine from Providence, which leaves Maine’s strongest goalie from the 2023-24 season as the team’s third goaltender to begin the season. Massicotte had originally signed with the Nailers this off-season before being traded to Maine. Prior to going pro, the Shawinigan, Quebec native spent parts of five seasons in the QMJHL with the Rimouski Oceanic and hometown Shawinigan Cataractes, where he scored 16 goals and added 54 assists for 70 points. He would also win a QMJHL Championship with the Cataractes in 2022.
Alex Sheehy (F) (Reserve)- The 26-year-old defenseman will be the only skater starting the season on the regular reserve list after putting up six assists in 35 games in his rookie season with the Mariners. He is one of eight defensemen currently on the Mariners roster.
Nick Jermain (F) (3-Day IR)- After not playing in either of the Mariners pre-season games vs Worcester Railers, Jermain will now miss the Mariners first two regular season games vs Wheeling Nailers and will be eligible to return on October 25th when they welcome the Norfolk Admirals to town. The 28-year-old forward is making his second stint with the Mariners after spending parts of two seasons with the team during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, where he put 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 63 games. Jermain finished last year in France, where he put up four goals and six assists for 10 points in 14 games with Anglet of Ligue Magnus.
Jason Horvath (D) (14-Day IR)- The injury to Hovath would explain the Mariners trade yesterday in going out and acquiring another defenseman in Cole Cameron to help provide some depth while Horvath is out. Horvath is entering his fifth season in the league, where he’s put up two goals and 23 assists for 25 points in 82 games. The Russel, Ontario native, spent 26 games in Romania last season, putting up three goals and seven assists for 10 points before joining Maine at the end of the season, where he put up four assists in 19 games. Horvath will be eligible to return on November 2nd when the Mariners host Reading.
Christian Sarlo (F) (14-Day IR)- This a rough start to the year for the 23-year-old forward who made a solid impression of the Mariners, putting up three goals and three assists for six points in 10 regular season games and earned himself a spot on the Mariners Kelly Cup Playoff Roster where he saw action in three of the team’s seven games. Prior to going pro, he put up 19 goals and 29 assists for 48 points in 122 games with the Nittany Lions. Sarlo will be eligible to return on November 2nd when the Mariners host the Reading Royals.
Who Didn’t Make The Cut
Dante Giannuzzi (G)- When Giannuzzi was originally signed, Jeremy Swayman had yet to sign with the Bruins, so Giannuzzi was an insurance piece if Bischel or Maier needed to start the season in Maine. I wouldn’t be shocked if he finds a new home rather quickly, especially since he has prior ECHL experience as he spent his rookie season with the Utah Grizzlies.
Austin Master (F)- The 26-year-old forward was the only player brought to camp by the Mariners after playing 40 games with the Reading Royals during the 2023-24 season, where he put up two goals and seven assists for nine points. Master played in Maine’s preseason game on Saturday Night.
Alden Weller (D)—The Falmouth, Maine native was one of the final cuts for the Mariners but didn’t play in either of their pre-season games. Weller has two years of ECHL experience under his belt, spending a year with the Rapid City Rush and then coming home to play a year with the Mariners, but he didn’t play during the 2023-24 season. In 90 career games, he’s put up two goals and 11 assists for 13 points.
