The Maine Mariners have kicked off their 2025-26 roster moves by re-signing captain Wyllum Deveaux, who returns for his third season with the team.

Originally signed as a free agent ahead of the 2023-24 season, Deveaux had previously played three pro games with the Wheeling Nailers and spent five years at Harvard University, competing in NCAA Division I hockey from 2018 to 2023. Before college he played in the USHL with the Tri-City Storm and Des Moines Buccaneers. He was an alternate captain for Tri-City and his performance there would land him a spot as a Harvard Crimson.

Over the course of his collegiate hockey career, Deveaux achieved several personal milestones starting from his freshman year.

During his first season at Harvard, he played 26 games and contributed three goals. He achieved a career-high of one goal in four matches and recorded a single assist twice. His most recent standout performance occurred on October 29, 2021, during a game at Dartmouth. In that match, he had his best two-point game, scoring a goal and providing an assist, which played a key role in the team’s season-opening win.

During his junior season in 2021–22, he appeared in 25 games and recorded one goal and one assist. His most notable performance came in the season opener at Dartmouth, where he scored both points in a single game. As a sophomore in 2019–20, he played in 14 games and registered one assist, which came in a matchup against Arizona State on December 29.

Once he graduated, Deveaux made his way to Portland and began to shine. Building on a solid rookie year, he played 46 games, recording 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points. He also made his mark in the postseason, scoring his first playoff goal, which was a game-winner in Game 1 of the first-round series against Adirondack. Later in the season, he was loaned to the AHL’s Providence Bruins, making his debut at that higher level, but has not made it up to Providence again.

Across two seasons with the Mariners, Deveaux has compiled 43 points in 95 regular-season games. His journey from the overlooked camp invite to team captain reflects both his development on the ice and his character off it.

Appointed captain on January 23, Deveaux had started the season as one of three alternate captains. He became just the third player in franchise history to serve as captain, following Zach Tolkinen and Connor Doherty.

Off the ice, Deveaux has been just as impactful. For the second consecutive year, he was honored with the team’s Community Service Award, sharing the recognition with former teammate Matthew Philip.

Deveaux told Mariners’ media and the team, “I’m excited to get back in front of the fans in Portland… Every game is special because of the energy they bring. We feed off that, and we’re going to keep building on the momentum from the second half of last season. There’s a real hunger in the locker room… we’re ready to get going.”

As for his time as captain, Deveaux has backed up the title with performance. He scored the overtime winner on New Year’s Eve and consistently delivered in crunch time, including a multi-goal, multi-point effort in a 4–1 victory over Trois‑Rivières on April 2, where he netted both power-play strikes and an assist, propelling the Mariners to their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Described by head coach Terrence Wallin as someone who “stands up for teammates, cares about the logo, cares about the town”. Deveaux embodies the ideal captain: competitive, reliable under pressure, and rooted in the community he represents. Already, he’s showing through on‑ice leadership with clutch plays and steady offense, while off-ice, his community engagement reflects a deep bond with Portland and the Mariners’ fanbase.
