Earlier this week, the Newfoundland Growlers Named Marcus Power as their Hockey Opts Coordinator he will report directly to Kenny O’Leary who’s the VP of Hockey Operations. Power spent three seasons with the Growlers playing in 141 games and putting up 58 goals and 80 assists for 138 points, Power last played in the ECHL during the 2021-22 season and spent last year as a scout in the QMJHL with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. “I am delighted to welcome Marcus to my Hockey Operations staff,” said Kenny O’Leary, Vice President of Hockey Operations in the team’s press release. “His playing experience and his dedication to the success of pro hockey in Newfoundland makes him the perfect fit for our team. I am confident that Marcus’s insights and expertise will further enhance our on-ice product and contribute significantly to our continued success.”
The Newfoundland Growlers have had a very quiet offseason as they currently stand as one of two ECHL teams yet to make a signing (Idaho Steelheads are the other one), and there may be a reason for it. Newfoundland lost their head coach Eric Wellwood, who took an assistant coaching position with the Toronto Marlies and Nathan McIver their assistant coach took an assistant spot with the Belleville Senators. It’s not only coaches that the Growlers have lost as Derian Plouffe, Zach O’Brien, Chris Martenet, Brennan Kapcheck, Pavel Gogolev, and Adam Holwell all went overseas. Brandon Kruse signed with the Walleye, and is the only Growler to sign elsewhere in the ECHL according to Elite Prospects.
