Maine Mariners forward Matthew Philip is heading overseas to France to join Cergy-Pontoise of Ligue Magnus. Phillip isn’t the only ECHLer that has signed with the Jokers next season as Toledo Walleye defenseman Tanner Palocsik also signed with the team. Philip was originally signed by the Bison and attended training camp with Bloomington before being signed by the Mariners right before the regular-season started. In 50 games during his rookie year with Maine, he would put up eight goals and five assists for 13 points. Despite the rough season, he would finish the year by putting up two points in the final three games of the season. He is the second forward from the Mariners to take the overseas route, joining Josh Nixon who is heading to the EIHL to join the Guildford Flames. Philip was on the Mariners season-ending roster.
Prior to his time in Maine, Matthew Philip spent time in the OHL and USports. The Llderton, Ontario native would spend four years in the OHL playing for the Niagara Ice Dogs and Owen Sound Attack. In 227 OHL games, he would put up 59 goals and 59 assists for 118 points. He would add four goals and six assists for 10 points in 20 OHL Games. The 26-year-old forward then played three seasons in USports with St. Francis Xavier University where he had 30 goals and 31 assists for 61 points in 63 games. He would have three assists for eight points in 13 USports Playoff games.
