The ECHL Department of Player’s Saftey has suspended Reading Royals forward Nick Capone one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for his actions in Wednesday’s game vs the Adirondack Thunder. Capone slew-footed Adirondack Thunder forward Grant Loven behind the play at the 18:28 mark of the second period. The East Haven, Connecticut native would be assessed a match penalty on the play. He is eligible to return on Saturday vs Maine Mariners.
Capone, 23, is in his rookie season with the Royals, and he’s put up five assists along with 37 PIMS in 35 games. Prior to going pro, he spent four seasons at UConn, where he put up 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points, along with 116 PIMS. The Tampa Bay Lightning would draft Capone in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL Draft but would not sign him. Capone had 94 penalty minutes in 34 games with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL during the 2019-20 season. Those 94 penalty minutes led the team.
With Capone out of the lineup, I would expect Yvan Mongo to make his season debut with the Royals after having his lifted with the team on Tuesday. Mongo spent the last two seasons with Reading, putting up 22 goals and 29 assists for 51 points in 95 games. His addition to the lineup will hopefully bring a spark to the Royals, who are 26th in the league, averaging 27 and a half shots a game.
