The Rapid City Rush have announced that they have signed 5’11” defenseman Alexander Stensson for the 2025-26 season.
Stensson started his professional career back home in Sweden in the 2017-18 season, playing in HockeyEttan. He played in HockeyEttan through the 2023-24 season, playing seven seasons. During that time, Stensson played for HA74, HC Dalen, Nybro Vikings IF, Kalmar HC, Hanhals IF, and Nyköpings SK. Through 225 games in HockeyEttan, Stensson registered 21 goals and 51 assists for 72 points with 286 penalty minutes and a -4. He served as an alternate captain of Nyköpings SK in the 2023-24 season.
Stensson then went to Hungary for the 2024-25 season, where he played for DEAC in Erste Liga and served as an alternate captain. In 22 playoff games, he registered six goals and 16 assists for 22 points with 24 penalty minutes and a +12.
The 2025-26 season will be Stensson’s first season in North America. With that, it may take him some time to not only adjust to playing in the ECHL, but also to playing the North American style of hockey. While he is not the biggest defenseman, Stensson has quite a bit of speed and is able to make it difficult for opponents to score when he is on the ice. Stensson is also able to produce on offense, usually playing the top of the zone, but can go deep when needed. He has a wicked shot from the blue line and can also use his shot from the faceoff circles. While it may take a few games to adjust, Stensson should be a great addition to the Rush.
