The Reading Royals have announced that they’ve hired Wes Wolfe as the 24th head coach in franchise history. Wolfe joins the Royals after last year’s assistant coach, Ryan Anderson, took a job with the Utah Grizzlies. The hiring of Wolfe likely completes the Royals’ coaching staff for the 2025-26 season.
The Niagara Falls, Ontario, native has spent the last eight of the last nine years as the assistant coach of the Erie Otters of the OHL. In his first year with the Oilers, Wolfe and Kris Knoblauch led the Erie to their second OHL Championship in franchise history. In his one year away from the Oilers during the 2021-22 season, he was the GM/Head Coach of the Cobourg Cougars of the OJHL, leading the team to a 28-19-6 record as the Cougars would end up losing in the conference finals after picking up their East Division Title in Franchise history.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Anthony Peters, Peter Luukko and the Oak View Group, and David Farrar for trusting me with this opportunity” Wolfe stated. “I am excited to support Anthony in building a winning culture here in Reading, to connect with and contribute to the local community, and to play a role in developing our players into both outstanding athletes and great people.”

Wolfe recently had his first international stint behind the bench as the assistant coach for the Canada Red U17 team at the 2024 U17 World Challenge, where they won a silver medal. He will have another international stint as he was recently named an assistant coach for Team Ontario at the 2027 Canada Winter Games. His coaching career began in NDJCHL with the Chippawa Riverhawks, where he spent one season as the team’s assistant coach. He also spent three years as a player with the Riverhawks before stepping behind the bench. Wolfe had 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points in 100 games during his three seasons as a player. He would add two goals and two assists for four points in 23 career NDJCHL playoff games.
