ECHL: Reading Royals Relieve Jason Binkley Of Head Coaching and GM Duties

The Reading Royals have announced that they’ve relieved Jason Binkley of his duties as Head Coach and General Manager. Reading after missing the Kelly Cup Playoffs in 2024, would put up 33-28-9-2 record and would sneak into the fourth and final playoff spot on the last day of the regular season, before being swept by the Trois-Rivieres Lions in the opening round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Binkley, 32, joined the Royals before the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach and would hold that role until he was named the Interim Head Coach on January 29th, 2024. The Royals went 13-16-3 in the final 32 games of the 2023-24 regular season under Binkley. Prior to joining Reading, Binkley spent one season as an assistant coach in the SPHL with the Fayetteville Marksmen. The search for the next coach of the Royals will begin immediately.

Prior to coaching, Jason Binkley spent seven seasons as a defenseman in the ECHL, where he played for the South Carolina Stingrays, Utah Grizzlies, Cincinnati Cyclones, Fort Wayne Komets, and Jacksonville Icemen. During the 2016-17 season, he would lead all Komet defensemen with 37 assists and 44 points. He would put up 28 goals and 111 assists for 139 points in 331 career games. He would add four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 23 career Kelly Cup Playoff Games. The Powell, Ohio, native also put up one assist in four games with the Cleveland Monsters during the 2019-20 season. Binkley also spent six games overseas with the Nottingham Panthers that season, putting up one assist.
