Wheeling Nailers’ goaltender Sergei Murashov has been named the Howies Hockey Tape ECHL Rookie of the Month for November. This accolade comes as no surprise given Murashov’s stellar performance throughout the month.

Performance in November

Murashov’s performance in November was outstanding. He went 6-1-0 with a 2.12 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage in seven appearances. He consistently delivered high-level performances, allowing two goals or less in four of his seven outings and making at least 27 saves on five occasions. His month was highlighted by a 48-save performance in a 6-4 win against Fort Wayne on November 23 and a 36-save effort in a 4-1 victory over Toledo on November 27.

Why He Was Selected

Murashov was selected as the Howies Hockey Tape ECHL Rookie of the Month for several reasons. His ability to consistently deliver high-level performances and his significant contributions to his team’s success were key factors. His smooth transition from playing in Russia to excelling in the ECHL and AHL showcased his adaptability and skill as a goaltender. His achievements in November reflect his potential and talent, making him a standout rookie in the league.

Sergei Murashov began his professional career in Russia, where he competed for four seasons in the MHL, the nation’s junior hockey league. During this period, he amassed an impressive record of 73 wins, 30 losses, and 12 overtime losses, which included 22 shutouts, a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.04, and a save percentage (SV%) of .934. This season marks his inaugural appearance in North America, following his selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and his subsequent signing with the team last summer. He made his AHL debut on October 13 against the Springfield Thunderbirds, where he recorded 27 saves in a 4-1 victory, concluding the game with a GAA of 1.00 and an SV% of .964.

Murashov’s selection as the Howies Hockey Tape ECHL Rookie of the Month for November underscores his potential and highlights his significant contributions to his team’s success.

Future Prospects in the NHL

As one of the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ goaltending prospects, he has shown consistent effort in both the ECHL and AHL. Despite having strong goaltending depth, the Penguins have faced challenges this season. Murashov’s ongoing development and performance in the AHL and ECHL will be key in assessing his NHL readiness and his ability to contribute to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ depth. His three-year entry-level contract with the Penguins reflects the organization’s confidence in his potential to do so.
