The Atlanta Gladiators have announced the signing of forward Ryan Francis for the 2025–26 ECHL season, bringing back a dynamic scorer who made an impact in a brief stint with the team last year.

Pro Experience

Francis, 23, returns to Atlanta after splitting last season between the Adirondack Thunder and the Gladiators, where he collected 19 points in 36 ECHL games, including three goals in just six appearances with Atlanta. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native has also skated in the AHL with Laval, Ontario, and Stockton, gaining valuable pro experience since being drafted by the Calgary Flames in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

His best ECHL production came in 2022–23 with the Trois-Rivières Lions, posting 47 points (23G, 24A) in 57 games.

Junior Success

Before turning pro, Francis was a standout in the QMJHL with Cape Breton and Saint John. He put up back-to-back 70+ point seasons and capped his junior career by winning a CHL Memorial Cup Championship with the Sea Dogs in 2022.

Francis also reflected on his 2022 Memorial Cup championship run with Saint John:

“You want to win because it’s the funnest hockey you’ll ever play. That was the funnest hockey I ever played when I won… we did it on our home ice when we won the Memorial Cup, so it was pretty cool.” (Atlanta Gladiators, 2025a)

What He Brings to Atlanta

At 5’9” and 176 pounds, Francis is known for his speed, quick release, and ability to play both center and right wing. His creativity in the offensive zone and knack for producing in big moments should make him an important piece of Atlanta’s forward group this season.

Reflecting on his decision to return, Francis said:

“I liked the group of guys. I liked what the team as a core had and I thought there was an opportunity to have a winning team here and win hockey games… nice weather, great teammates, it was a pretty easy decision.” (Atlanta Gladiators, 2025a)

Looking ahead to this year, he pointed to developing his all-around game:

“I think I need to round out my 200-foot game, defensive side of the puck. Just need to keep working at those things, don’t get lazy with it, and that helps your team be better. That’s definitely the number one thing going into this year that I’m going to key in on.” (Atlanta Gladiators, 2025a)

Coach’s Perspective

Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Matt Ginn praised Francis’ offensive ability while also noting his resilience through last season:

“Ryan is a very dynamic offensive player. He is an elusive skater that wants to have the puck on his stick and be a difference maker on the ice. He had a tough season last year with various injuries, but we are really excited to have Ryan back in Atlanta and expect him to be a big part of our team.” (Atlanta Gladiators, 2025b)

With Francis back in the mix, the Gladiators keep adding exciting pieces for fans to cheer on. His skill, speed, and playmaking will give Atlanta another spark as the team builds toward what promises to be an action-packed 2025–26 season.
