ECHL: Savannah Ghost Pirates Sign Matt Choupani

Ian Do/Miami University

Earlier today, the Savannah Ghost Pirates attempted to add some forward depth to their roster by signing center Matt Choupani. Choupani joins the Ghost Pirates from the Miami Redhawks in Oxford, Ohio and is in the lineup for tonight’s game vs Jacksonville Icemen.

The 5’11 right-handed center will be making his professional debut, with Savannah having only played at the collegiate level until now. The forward had six goals and 10 assists, totaling 16 points in his 34 games for Miami this season. Prior to joining the Redhawks, Choupani was a part of the Northeastern University program for three seasons, where he racked up 41 points in 102 games for the Huskies. The 23-year-old’s most productive season in college was the 2022-2023 season, where he had ten goals and nine assists for 19 points in 35 games for Northeastern. The Montreal native also spent some time in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers for two seasons before joining the collegiate ranks. During his time in Des Moines, Choupani was nearly a point-per-game player in the 2020-2021 season, having 43 points in 48 games, with 20 of those being goals and the other 23 being assists. More recently, in Choupani’s last five games, he had a goal and an assist while being -2. Choupani is only 23 years old and has plenty of time to develop with Savannah. However, the Ghost Pirates are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff push and are likely hoping that their new signing can come in and contribute right away.
