The Kansas City Mavericks played their Mountain Division rivals, the Allen Americans, for a three-game series starting February 19 at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, Missouri. The Mavericks swept all three games, gaining a seven-point lead in the Mountain Division standings.

Game 1

Game one started with a goal by Chase Brand from the slot fed by Cade Borchardt and Damien Giroux at 11:27. This was Chase Brand’s first goal as a Kansas City Maverick. The Mavericks’ defense kept the Americans from scoring for the remainder of the period despite their 11 shots on goal, ending the period 2-0.

The second period was full of penalties, leading to multiple power-play opportunities for both teams, including a five-minute major by Mavericks Daniel Amesbury. While there were no power-play goals, the Mavericks scored twice: one by Cade Borchardt less than one minute into the second period and another by Luke Loheit at 11:42. Nick Isaacson scored the lone goal for the Americans, ending the second period in the Mavericks’ favor 3-1.

The American’s Nick Isaacson scored the only goal in the third period despite a combined 23 shots on goal. Jack LaFontaine stopped 26 out of 28 shots to lead the Mavericks to their 32 win of the season.

Game 2

The Mavericks started Friday night’s game with a goal by Justin MacPherson less than one minute into the first period. The excitement did not stop there; less than three minutes later, Cade Borchardt slammed one home on a breakaway to give the Mavericks a solid lead. The Maverick’s Nolan Sullivan scores again at 8:31 on a redirect from Luke Loheit and Jake McLaughlin to end the period 3-1 over the Americans.

The second period started much the same, with the Mavericks scoring first with a shot from the top of the left circle by Charlie Wright. A penalty by Mavericks Casey Carreau led to an American’s power play goal by Miko Matikka. The period ended with the Mavericks leading 4-1.

The Third period saw multiple goals by both teams, with a power play goal for the American’s Colin Jacobs at 8:58. Shortly after, Cade Borchardt fired one in the back of the net to make his 31st goal of the year. A couple of minutes later, Landon McCallum makes a power play goal to give the Mavericks a solid lead. The American’s Hudson Wilson scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway to end the period. Despite the short-handed goal, Victor Ostman was able to stop 29/32 goals to give the Mavericks a 6-3 victory.

Game 3

Saturday’s game started with a goal by Damien Giroux at 4:40 to put the Mavericks on the board first. A couple of minutes later, Max Andreev gave the Mavericks a solid two-goal lead. There were no goals during the second period, with both sides playing a solid defensive game, holding combined shots on goal to just 14 for the period, with the Mavericks outshooting the Americans.

The Americans played a solid offensive game during the third period, outshooting the Mavericks 17/9. The Americans had the only goal for the period by Mark Duarte. The American’s Luke Richardson stopped 36/38 shots, but that was not enough to win the game. Mavericks Jack LaFontaine saved 26/27 to lead the team to a 2-1 victory over the Allen Americans.

The Mavericks hold a solid lead in the Mountain Division, but they are one point behind the Western Conference leader, Toledo Walleye. The Kansas City Mavericks’ next game is against the Utah Grizzles, who are currently seventh in the Mountain Division.
