ECHL Series Recap: Kansas City Mavericks vs Wheeling Nailers | 01/24-01/26/2025

Friday starts a three-game series between Kansas City Mavericks and Wheeling Nailers at Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia. Kansas City hopes to continue the two-game winning streak that started with Rapid City Rush last Week. 

Game 1 – Friday, January 24

Friday night’s game marked 100 career games for Max Andreev, which he started with a penalty for goalkeeper interference. This allowed the Nailers to capitalize on the power play with a goal by Kyle Jackson (5:40), a former Mavericks teammate. A few minutes later, Jackson (13:39) scored again, leaving the Mavericks struggling to get on the board. A penalty by the Nailers’ David Drake allowed the Mavericks’ Cam Morrison to score on a power play, assisted by Max Andreev and Casey Carreau, ending the period with a score of Mavericks 1, Nailers 2.

The second period started with a goal by the Nailers’ Matthew Quercia (3:05), followed by a Mavericks goal by Damien Giroux (11:38), assisted by Jackson Berezowski and David Cotton.

The third period began with the Nailers leading 3-2, but the Mavericks’ Marcus Crawford tied the score with a goal at 3:29. The Nailers soon pulled ahead with a goal by Matt Koopman, leaving the final score 4-3 in favor of the Nailers. Friday night’s game also marked 100 career points for David Cotton with an assist in the second period. The goal by Marcus Crawford set the record for the most goals by a defenseman in Mavericks franchise history.

Game 2 – Saturday, January 25

Game two of the series started with the Mavericks seeking revenge for the previous night’s loss. David Cotton scored on a power play goal at 3:12, assisted by Jackson Berezowski and Landon McCallum. Soon, the Nailers tied the score with a power play goal by Kyle Jackson (5:21). The Mavericks were on a scoring streak, and David Cotton scored another power play goal, followed by a goal from Landon McCallum. The Mavericks ended the period with a two-goal lead going into the second period.

The second period started with a Mavericks goal by Cade Borchardt at 0:23. Shortly after, Justin MacPherson scored at 0:48. Later, Landon McCallum capitalized on a power play, ending the period with the Mavericks leading 6-1.

The third period saw numerous penalties for tripping, roughing, and boarding, leading to frustration and no goals for the Nailers. Casey Carreau managed to score at 6:45. After that, the Nailers were able to stop the Mavericks from scoring, and the game ended with the Mavericks leading 7-1.

Game 3 – Sunday, January 26

The series started with both teams looking for a win, and neither team scored in the first period. In the second period, the Nailers finally got on the board with a power play goal by Jordan Martel at 8:31. Shortly after, the Mavericks’ Landon McCallum scored their first goal, ending the period tied 1-1.

The Mavericks held the Nailers scoreless in the third period. Max Andreev scored a breakaway goal at 8:03, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. As the Nailers pulled their goaltender in an attempt to tie the score, Cade Borchardt capitalized on the empty net at 18:50, giving the Mavericks a two-goal lead.

Mavericks’ goaltender Victor Ostman stopped 23 out of 24 shots, securing the Mavericks’ 24th win of the season. The Mavericks are currently in second place in the Mountain Division, behind the Tahoe Night Monsters.
