The South Carolina Stingrays will again be looking for a new captain as Garet Hunt has decided to go back overseas, this time to Italy. Hunt returned to the ECHL for his 13th season in the league as he’s spent time with the Stockton Thunder, Alaska Aces, Jacksonville Icemen, Wheeling Nailers, and South Carolina Stingrays and has spent the majority of his career in a leadership role. In 776 regular season games, he’s put up 106 goals and 155 assists for 261 points, along with 2,807 PIMs, and currently holds the ECHL record for career PIMs. The 36-year-old forward has added 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points, along with 124 PIM in 70 career Kelly Cup Playoff Games. Hunt led the ECHL in PIMs in 2013 (235) and 2016 (277).
This isn’t the first time that Hunt has played overseas, as he spent the 2019-20 and 2022-23 seasons with the Kunlun Red Stars, putting up a goal and two assists for three points, along with 158 PIMS in 68 games. He would lead the KHL in PIMs (95) during the 2022-23 season. Hunt would spend the 2021-22 season in Slokavia playing for CSM Corona Brasov in 44 games while putting up 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points in 44 games, along with 199 penalty minutes. Prior to going pro, the Maple Ridge, British Columbia native would spend parts of four seasons in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants, putting up 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points, along with 542 PIMS in 193 games with the Giants. Hunt would win a WHL Championship with the Giants in 2006.
