Greenville, SC—After the recent injury of Bobby Russell and call-up of Max Martin, the Swamp Rabbits have been experiencing the highs and lows of a short man defensive roster. Before they played in Florida last night (Dec. 28), the Swamp Rabbits had to call on forward J.D. Greenway to take the mantle of defense when his team competed against Savannah on December 23. With no real surprise, the 6 ‘6 forward did a solid job as a substituted d-man; he even got two assists for that game. However, with the loss to Everblades on December 28, the Rabbits’ aren’t taking any chances with their current crumbling defense. Therefore, they’ve made a new roster move, as they’ve acquired Jacob Modry from the Newfoundland Growlers for Cash Considerations.
Modry, 24, is a 6 ‘6, 216 pound defenceman who shoots left. He’s new to the professional hockey atmosphere, as he began playing in the ECHL last season during the 2022-23 season. As of late, during the 23-24 season in the ECHL, the California native played twenty games for the Growlers, tallying up two goals and two assists, and has posted 29 shots; Modry has a 0.50 PIMPG and has ten penalty minutes served. Last season, Modry got an abbreviated look at the ECHL, as he played only three games for the Savannah Ghost Pirates and posted a single assist. Before joining the ECHL, he played two seasons with SUNY-Plattsburgh NCAA III. Modry tallied up a total record of eight goals and thirty-three assists in just 54 games played. In his 2022-23 season run with Plattsburgh, Modry had a successful run as a defenseman, tallying up four goals and nineteen assists. Compared to the season before – 2021-22 – he posted a record of four goals and fourteen assists. Prior to playing in Plattsburgh, Modry started his collegiate career with NCAA Merrimack College in the 2019-20 season, as he played 36 games of two seasons there and tallied up only three points from just three assists.
