The Kansas City Mavericks have recently completed a trade to acquire defenseman Josh Thrower from the South Carolina Stingrays.
Hailing from Squamish, British Columbia, Thrower was active in junior hockey in the WHL for five years, from 2011 to 2016. During his six seasons in the WHL, Josh achieved notable success, securing a bronze and silver medal, along with a championship title. Throughout his time in the league, he competed with the Calgary Hitmen, Tri-City Americans, Vancouver Giants, and Moose Jaw Warriors. Across 309 games in the WHL, he totaled 11 goals, 73 assists, for 84 points.
Thrower has a strong presence in the ECHL, starting his professional career in 2017 with the Allen Americans where he recorded one goal and 11 assists, totaling 12 points. After his time with the Americans he joined the roster for the Atlanta Gladiators that had him add three goals, 14 assists and 228 penalty minutes after 135 games with the Gladiators. During the 2021-22 season, Thrower was tied for the league lead with 11 fighting majors.
Thrower will be joining the Mavericks after participating in 34 games for the South Carolina Stingrays in the 2023-24 season. He was traded to South Carolina from the Norfolk Admirals after playing only two games with the Admirals. Throughout his tenure with the Stingrays, Thrower made three assists for the team.
Thrower has proven himself as a dependable shutdown defenseman, bringing a valuable mix of experience and reliability to the defensive side for Kansas City. With the recent addition of Daniel Amesbury, the Kansas City Mavericks are set to have a powerhouse of defensive talent in the upcoming season.
Kansas City will start their season on the road, facing off against the Wichita Thunder on October 18th.
