The Toledo Walleye have re-signed defenseman Cole Cameron for the 2024-25 season. Cameron saw action with the Walleye at the end of the season after playing for Toronto Metropolitan University. He is now the third defenseman signed for the season, joining newcomer Jalen Smereck and the returning Brendon Michaelian.
Cameron previously played for the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2016-17 to 2017-18, then joined the North Bay Battalion for the 2018-19 season and finished his OHL career with the Kitchener Rangers later in the same season. He complied two goals and 26 assists for 30 points in 195 games. He would be a plus player in the plus/ minus stats in three of the four OHL seasons.
He then played for the University of Guelph of the Ontario University Athletics Association (OUAA) from 2019-20 to 2022-23, totaling six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in 61 games. Cameron would then play for Toronto Metropolitan University, scoring two goals and six assists for eight points in 28 games. He then turned pro, playing eight games at the end of last season, going scoreless.
Cameron is not a big defenseman, listed at 6-foot-0 and 190 pounds, but he is a solid defenseman who fits in well with the Walleye systems and how they play the game. He does bring a bit of offense to the game and may see some power-play time this season. He is a player who is responsible on his end and can get the transition game going with a nice outlet pass.
