The Trois-Rivieres Lions have signed rookie center Tommy Cormier to a contract for the 2024-25 season. Cormier, 20, has spent the past two-plus seasons in the QMJHL with the Victoriaville Tigers, putting up 82 goals and 116 assists for 198 points in 171 games, including back-to-back 30+ goals in the last two seasons, including serving as an assistant captain last season with Victoriaville. The Quebec native’s brother, Xavier Cormier, has spent 113 games at the ECHL level, putting up 22 goals and 51 assists for 73 points in 113 games with the Florida Everblades and Fort Wayne Komets. He would finish third on the Komets in points and assists last year after putting up 15 goals and 30 assists for 45 points in 65 games.
This is a really strong signing by the Lions, as we’ve seen many players who have had success in the Q also have success in the ECHL. One example is Xavier Parent with the Adirondack Thunder, who had 51 points in 50 games with Adirondack and three goals and three assists for six points in 14 games with the Utica Comets of the AHL in his rookie season. Heading into next season, expect Cormier to be a guy who may start in the bottom six for the Lions, but if he can show that he can succeed at the ECHL level, he’s a guy who could see some time on the top six. The signing of Cormier now gives Trois-Rivieres 11 players signed to contracts for the 2024-25 season.
