The Trois-Rivieres Lions (44-15-6-2) have clinched their first North Division Title with a 6-4 win tonight over the Maine Mariners. They will have home-ice advantage for the first two rounds of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Lions are 23-4-4-2 this year on home ice.
One of the biggest reasons the Trois-Rivieres Lions won the North Division was their goaltending. Luke Cavallin and Hunter Jones have played in 56 of the 67 games this season for the Lions. Cavallin has led the charge, going 19-9-1-1 with a 2.06 GAA, .931 SV%, and three shutouts. Jones has a great start to the year as he didn’t suffer his first regulation loss till February 22nd vs Adirondack Thunder. As a team, the Lions are fourth in the league for goals against at 2.49 per game. Special teams have also played a big part for the Lions as they are in the top five on both the PP and the PK.
The Lions have four players with at least 20 goals in Anthony Beauregard, Logan Nijhoff, Morgan Adams-Moisan, and Jakov Novak. This is a big improvement from last season, when the Lions only had two players with 20+ goals, one of which was Jakov Novak, who had 30 goals. One player that will prove to be a difference maker in the playoffs will be Alex Beaucage. The 23-year-old has played 22 games with the Lions but has 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points. He’s also seen time at the AHL level playing in 22 games with the Laval Rocket, where he has two goals and three assists for five points.
