ECHL: Tyler Spezia Heads Overseas

Toledo Walleye forward Tyler Spezia is heading overseas to Germany to join the Nurnberg Ice Tigers in the DEL after spending his first seven seasons in North America. Spezia had a breakout year for the Walleye, putting up 25 goals and 32 assists for 57 points in 52 games. He would add six goals and two assists for eight points in 16 Kelly Cup Playoff Games. Spezia becomes the first member of the Walleye to take the overseas route this Summer.

Tyler Spezia, 32, spent the first seven years of his career primarily with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. In his six seasons with the Griffins, Spezia would put up 33 goals and 52 assists for 85 points in 240 games. His only Calder Cup Playoff action would come during the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs, where he had one assist in two games. Prior to this season, Spezia saw two stints with Toledo. He would begin his pro career in Toledo during the 2018-19 season, where he put up 11 goals and 28 assists for 39 points in 58 games, as well as being named to the 2019 ECHL All-Star Game. The Clinton Township, Michigan native’s next stint with Toledo came during the 2019-20 season. In 21 games with Toledo during the 2019-20 season, he had 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.

College Career

Prior to going pro, Spezia spent one season in the USHL with the Youngstown Phantoms. In 58 games with the Phantoms, he had 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points. Spezia would then take the NCAA route, spending four seasons at Bowling Green University. In 147 games with the Falcons, Spezia put up 34 goals and 38 assists for 72 points. He would be named to the WCHA All-Academic Team after the 2015-16 season.
