ECHL: Worcester Railers: Goaltender John Muse Retires

There comes a time in every player’s career when they have to decide to hang up the skates. The time has come for Goaltender John Muse.

Muse has enjoyed a long hockey career over 14 years but is staying involved in the hockey community. Muse is taking a job overseas to enter into the coaching world.

Before going professional, Muse played for four years at Boston College. He dressed in 144 games for Boston College from 2007-2011. Over the four years played, Muse averaged a 2.40 Goals Against Average and 0.913 save percentage. At the end of his senior season in 2011, he signed to play in the AHL with the Portland Pirates.

In the 2011-2012 season, Muse signed to play with the Charlotte Checkers. He dressed in 15 games and played 25 games with the Florida Everblades, the ECHL affiliate at the time for the Checkers. Up until the 2016-2017 season, Muse played for the Charlotte Checkers for four more seasons, along with 19 games for the Texas Stars, while also being in the ECHL with the Florida Everblades and Fort Wayne Komets. During those seasons in the AHL, he played in 129 games and averaged a 2.74 Goals Against Average and 0.908 save percentage.

In the 2016-2017 season, Muse was signed with the Rochester Americans and played in the ECHL with the Elmira Jackals. He dressed in 14 games for Rochester and ended the season with a 3.08 GAA and a .907 save percentage. Muse dressed in six games for the Jackals and averaged 2.78 GAA and .925 save percentage.

In the 2017-2018 season, Muse started the season in the ECHL with the Reading Royals. With injuries in the Flyers system, Muse was re-called to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He earned a two-way contract due to his play with Lehigh Valley. Muse played 15 games for the Phantoms and ended with a 2.46 GAA and a .919 save percentage. Muse played in 26 games for the Royals and ended the season with a 2.24 GAA and a .931 save percentage.

In the 2018-2019 season, Muse played for Wheeling Nailers and AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During that season, Muse suited up for 21 games for the Nailers and averaged 3.40 GAA and a .878 save percentage. With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he played in 10 games and ended the season with a 3.00 GAA and a .906 save percentage. This was the last season that Muse played in the United States before going overseas to play.

Muse played in the VHL and KHL during the 2019-2020 season. He played for Kunlun Red Star and KRS-BSU Beijing. For KRS-BSU Beijing, Muse played in 33 games and had a 2.53 GAA and .928 save percentage. He had a 3.79 GAA and a .889 save percentage during his one game with the Kunlun Red Star. For the 2020-2021 season, Muse headed to Denmark and played 11 games for Rødovre Mighty Bulls. He also played for Sheffield Steelers in five games and averaged a 3.38 GAA and .878 save percentage. The next season, in 2021-2022, Muse stayed in Denmark with Rødovre Mighty Bulls and played 21 games. In the 2022-2023 season, Muse played in the EIHL for the Glasgow Clan. He played in 36 games and averaged a 3.25 GAA and .910 save percentage.

In the 2023-2024 season, Muse was called upon due to injuries within the Islanders system and was signed to a contract with the Worcester Railers. He was re-signed over the 2024 off-season to another year. Collectively, Muse played in 40 games for the Railers and averaged a 2.80 GAA and 0.909 save percentage. Muse earned a recall to the Bridgeport Islanders in the 2024-2025 season but did not dress in any games.
