ECHL: Zach Vinnell Joins Gladiators as Assistant Coach

The Atlanta Gladiators have added a fresh voice to the coaching staff, announcing that Zach Vinnell will serve as an Assistant Coach for the 2025–26 season.

The 27-year-old Cochrane, Alberta native brings a well-rounded understanding of the game, shaped by recent experience in high-intensity settings. His addition reinforces the organization’s commitment to building a competitive and strategically focused roster.

Winning Mentality, Proven Track Record

Fresh off a historic season with the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), Vinnell joins Atlanta after helping lead the Steelers to a clean sweep of championships. In 2023–24, Sheffield captured the Challenge Cup, League Championship, and Playoff title, completing the rare EIHL Grand Slam. Vinnell contributed defensively throughout the regular season and playoffs, helping the Steelers dominate in every phase of the game.

That championship run wasn’t the end of his season, it was the start of a new chapter. Vinnell returned to Coventry in a different role, stepping behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Blaze during the 2024–25 campaign.

From Steady Defenseman to Bench Leader

Vinnell’s shift into coaching followed a playing career marked by consistency and leadership. After three seasons at Merrimack College, where he earned a degree in Business Sports Management, he transferred to Bowling Green State University to complete his MBA while anchoring the Falcons’ blue line. He led the defense in scoring with 20 points in 36 games.

From there, Vinnell signed with the Indy Fuel to close out the 2022–23 season. He made an immediate impact, collecting 10 points in just 16 games and adding another in the playoffs. His quick adjustment to the pro game—and his ability to elevate those around him—set the stage for what’s becoming a fast-rising coaching career.

Back From Across the Pond

Now set to join Gladiators Head Coach Matt Ginn behind the bench, Vinnell returns to North America with a clear purpose: help shape a roster ready to compete in a tight South Division.

His coaching style mirrors the way he played; detail-oriented, composed, and quietly competitive. In Coventry, he worked closely with the defense and special teams, and he’s expected to bring that same focus to Atlanta’s bench this fall.

The 2025–26 season begins October 18 when the Gladiators host the Utah Grizzlies at Gas South Arena.
