On Wednesday, January 8th, 2025, Edmonton Oilers’ top prospect Matthew Savoie was selected to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic. Savoie has had an impressive start to this season with the Bakersfield Condors, scoring nine goals and recording 24 points in 29 games, which earned him a spot in the annual event. This past summer, the Oilers acquired him from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Ryan McLeod, along with their own prospect, Tyler Tulio. Savoie was regarded as the top prospect for Buffalo and is considered a valuable addition to the Oilers organization. He is currently making a strong impact with the Bakersfield Condors, ranking second in team scoring behind Seth Griffith, while the team sits eighth in the Pacific Division at 13-12-3.
Savoie was selected ninth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2022 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut against the Minnesota Wild on November 10, 2023, where he sustained an upper-body injury. With an impressive record of 263 points in 183 career WHL games and his contributions to the Moose Jaw Warriors during last year’s Memorial Cup tournament, Savoie has established himself as a valuable asset to any organization he is a part of. His time with the Rochester Americans in the AHL also showed promise, as he scored five points in six games in little time.
Recently, Savoie has been on a scoring streak, having racked up five goals and 14 points in his last 11 games. This stretch includes two performances with three points each and three with two points. As a rookie in the AHL, he is beginning to push for some NHL minutes with Edmonton. His transition to professional hockey is progressing well, and he has demonstrated a mature defensive game both at even strength and on the penalty kill. Recently, he has also been generating points on the power play and during five-on-five play, scoring 14 points in his last ten games, including 12 points in the last six outings.
This strong performance is a positive sign that Savoie’s game is developing, particularly offensively. However, it remains to be seen whether he will receive a call-up to the NHL soon. If the Oilers can clinch a favorable playoff position in the final games of the season or if there are injuries among their forwards (which we hope to avoid), Savoie could get the opportunity to play in the NHL later this regular season. Regardless, it is clear that Savoie will eventually become an important part of the forward group in Edmonton in the near future, whether it is later this season or a year from now.
