The Winnipeg Jets were eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday after a 2-1 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars in game six. After their elimination, there was chatter about which player could be heading over to the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship.
Nikolaj Ehlers is reportedly heading over to represent his home country of Denmark, while Nino Niederreiter will represent his home country of Switzerland in the World Championship.
Ehlers, 29, has played 29 games for Denmark in the World Championship, scoring 26 points (10G, 16A) in that time. He posted 63 points (24G, 39A) in 69 games for the Jets in the 2024-25 season. He added seven points (5G, 2A) in eight playoff games this year.
Ehlers is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) as his contract expired with the Winnipeg Jets. His contract situation is one to watch throughout the 2025 offseason. His contributions, when healthy, are significant to the Jets’ current makeup and will likely be a massive factor if he is re-signed. He’ll add significant firepower to Denmark’s lineup upon his arrival at the 2025 Men’s IIHF World Championship.
Niederreiter, 32, has far more experience in the World Championship representing Switzerland, as he has 56 games in the international tournament with 37 points (20G, 17A). He posted 37 points (17G, 20A) in 82 games for the Jets in the 2024-25 season. He added six points (4G, 2A) in 13 playoff games this year.
Niederreiter has two years left on his current contract worth $4 million annually. He’s been a great piece for the Jets since his acquisition at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline. Switzerland will utilize Niederreiter’s offensive contributions as they continue their push for a higher finish in the 2025 Men’s IIHF World Championship.
