The Vancouver Canucks announced on Wednesday, January 31st that they’ve acquired forward Elias Lindholm from the Calgary Flames. The Canucks gave up forward Andrei Kuzmenko, defensemen Joni Jurmo, and Hunter Brzustewicz alongside a 2024 First-Round and conditional 2024 Fourth-Round NHL Entry Draft selections. At the time of writing, the conditions on the pick are unknown.
Lindholm is the first domino of the trade deadline to fall, and now one has to wonder, will the Canucks’ acquisition of Lindholm create a ripple effect of trades?
What Does Lindholm Bring to the Canucks?
The Canucks are looking to gear up for a lengthy 2024 NHL Playoff run, Lindholm is no stranger to lengthy playoff runs. He joins former Flames teammate Nikita Zadorov in Vancouver, and the two players will look to bring a Stanley Cup back to Canada for the first time since 1993. Here is what the Canucks will expect out of Lindholm when he arrives in Vancouver.
Strong Two-Way Play
Lindholm is one of the strongest two-way players in the NHL today. He’s recognized for his defensive awareness and responsibility. He backchecks effectively, disrupts opposing plays in the defensive zone, and contributes to his team’s overall defensive efforts. In addition to his strong defensive efforts, Lindholm has displayed competence in the faceoff circle, which is crucial for gaining possession of the puck. A strong presence in faceoffs contributes to both offensive and defensive success.
This is why Lindholm was so heavily sought after ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline looming on March 8th. Vancouver identified Lindholm as a ‘must acquire’ and met Calgary’s asking price.
Scoring Ability
Lindholm also possesses a goal-scoring touch, showcasing a precise shot and the ability to finish scoring chances. He can contribute as a consistent goal-scorer for his team. Vancouver will also rely on Lindholm in their top-six to produce and help them win games. Additionally, Lindholm has a strong ability to make plays and envision them before they unfold. His passing skills enable him to set up scoring opportunities for his teammates, contributing to overall offensive production.
This is evident as Lindholm’s career-high for scoring came in the 2021-22 season for the Calgary Flames. He scored 42 goals and 40 assists that year, but his career-high for assists came in 2018-19 when he posted 51 assists. In his 2023-24 campaign, he’s posted nine goals and 23 assists for 32 points in 49 games for the Flames. The Canucks look to transfer Lindholm’s scoring successes as they hope for a Stanley Cup this year.
Leadership Qualities
Finally, Lindholm is a strong leader. He possesses a strong work ethic both in practice and during games. Leading by example, he demonstrates a commitment to hard work and dedication, setting a positive tone for his teammates. With this comes great responsibility and a need to hold yourself accountable, Lindholm effectively does just that. He takes responsibility for his performance and has no issue holding himself accountable. This attitude has positively influenced every team he’s played for and contributes to a positive locker room culture.
Final Thoughts
The Canucks have taken the top trade piece off of the board, and it looks like they aren’t done yet. They will look to bolster their roster to excel for the remainder of the regular season and into playoffs. The Canucks are tied with the Boston Bruins for first overall in the NHL standings. The Canucks sit alone at first in the Pacific Division. They currently have 71 points on the season with a win-loss record of 33-11-5. Who do you think the Canucks target next in their pursuit of a Stanley Cup?
