Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy returned to practice in a regular contact jersey Monday. After practice, Bruins Head Coach Joe Sacco said there was no timetable for McAvoy’s return to the lineup. The star defenseman has been out since February 8 after a shoulder injury during the Four Nations Face-Off.
“Charlie’s out of the red jersey…which is the next step in his progression. Today he was able to start some initial contact with the group. Still have no timeline on his return” – Joe Sacco
McAvoy was previously present at practice with a non-contact jersey, but Monday was a significant step in a potential return with eight games remaining in the regular season. The postseason seems unlikely with Boston eight points out of a Wild Card spot and amid an eight-game winless streak.
Charlie McAvoy met with the media after practice:
“What I’m trying to do right now is just rehab the best I can every day, to try and work every single day to put myself in a position to potentially play this year. What will happen will happen, but to be a part of the group every day, to try and set an example, and get closer with the guys, to build relationships, that’s what I’m trying to do right now.”
Charlie McAvoy is in his eighth season with the Bruins and has registered seven goals and 26 assists in 50 games. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Long Beach, New York native has finished in the top 20 in Norris Trophy voting for the NHL’s best defenseman five times in his career.
