A win against Canada in regulation would solidify their position at the top of the standings, clinching the Americans a spot in the final and boosting their confidence heading into the final stages of the tournament.
Canada: Canada had a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against Sweden on Wednesday. Key players like Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon were instrumental in securing the victory, with McDavid scoring the game-winning goal. Canada’s defense, led by Cale Makar, had been solid, and they were looking to maintain their strong performance against a high-flying USA team. Playing at home, Canada had the support of their home crowd, adding extra motivation to secure a win.
Injury Updates:
Cale Makar was out of the lineup tonight for Team Canada due to illness. In his place, Thomas Harley of the Dallas Stars stepped in, despite not having time to practice with the team before the game. Upon puck drop, Brandon Hagel (CAN) and Matthew Tkachuk (USA) dropped the gloves (Fighting at 00:02). Shortly after, Sam Bennett (CAN) and Brady Tkachuk (USA) engaged in a fight of their own after the skirmish in front of Canada’s net (Fighting at 00:03). Just nine seconds in, another scrum erupted involving Colton Parayko (USA) and J.T. Miller (CAN) (Fighting at 00:09). As a result, we now have three players from each side in the sin bin.
Canada goes on the power play due to an additional penalty on J.T. Miller (USA) for cross-checking (Cross-checking at 05:31). During the power play, Sidney Crosby (CAN) was slammed down behind the net. Noah Hanifin (CAN) then sent the puck up behind the net of Canada. Dylan Larkin’s (CAN) shot then went wide of the net. Later, Canada’s Sidney Crosby (CAN) took his shot onnet, but Connor Hellebuyck (USA) made the stop, leading to some heated exchanges between the teams immediately after.
Nathan MacKinnon (CAN) went on a rush but lost the puck, and icing was called on the following play, leading to a stoppage of play. The Tkachuk brothers left the sin bin and headed to the bench. Connor McDavid (CAN) then went on a quick breakaway and slammed the puck past Connor Hellebuyck (USA) over his glove side, putting Canada up 1-0. The goal at 05:31 was assisted by Drew Doughty (CAN) and Jordan Binnington (CAN).

Marchand (CAN) skillfully maneuvered the puck and slid it towards the net, but Team USA quickly recovered. Guentzel (USA) snatched the puck, only for Marchand (CAN) to reclaim it in a thrilling back-and-forth. Just as the tension peaked, Guentzel (USA) was called for tripping at 16:47, sending him to the penalty box and giving Canada a crucial power play opportunity.
Marner (CAN) got a point-blank shot on net, but Hellebuyck (USA) made a spectacular save. As we returned to full strength with just over a minute remaining, the tension on the ice was palpable.
Toews (CAN) walked in with the puck, too the shot, and Hellebuyck (USA) made a pad save. A laser shot from the right was also denied by Hellebuyck, showcasing his incredible goaltending skills.

Hellebuyck also made a crucial pad save on a shot by CAN, maintaining the deadlock. On the other end, Jordan Binnington (CAN) stopped a shot by Brady Tkachuk (USA), ensuring the score remained unchanged. Hagel then deked his way in on Hellebuyck, but once again, the stop was made as both teams fired on all cylinders.
