LEAFS QUICK LOOK (21-12-8)

4th in the Atlantic, 12th in the NHL

Last Game:

The Leafs played a much better game on Tuesday night than the previous two, keeping things even with the red-hot Oilers, who came into the game with a 10-game winning streak, but things fell apart with a few defensive mistakes in the final minutes of the game. They ultimately fell to the Oilers 4-2, moving their record to 0-3-1 in their last four games.

Projected Lines:

Leafs to Keep an Eye on:

  • Tyler Bertuzzi has played a relatively skilled defensive game, but Bertuzzi and his teammates have had some trouble converting on the offense he’s been creating. This ultimately has resulted in a demotion to the third line. While on the third line, Bertuzzi is still playing with an offensive forward in Domi, who has a great eye for the ice and some playmaking ability. Look for Bertuzzi to try and find his offensive game on the Leafs third line.
  • TJ Brodie has been on a decline this season. For most of Brodie’s contract with the Leafs, he has been elite defensively, but he’s reading plays slower this season, and that has led to some mistakes that ended up in the back of the net. Brodie has been worth his money, but playing on the top pairing, there is little room for error. Brodie will look to rebound against his former team tonight.
  • John Tavares seems to be in a slump as of late. After another great start to the season, his game has regressed, and his footspeed isn’t what it used to be, even from the beginning of this season. Tavares has had his linemates change many times throughout the season and finds himself back with Nylander and now with Knies as well. Look for Tavares to keep working hard and eventually be rewarded for that work.
