Game Recap: Dallas Stars at New York Rangers | 02/20/2024

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

After a tough 4-3 shootout loss in Boston, the Dallas Stars traveled to New York City to face the New York Rangers and snap a two-game losing skid, which wasn’t the case. The Stars lost 3-1 to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Dallas fell to 34-15-8, while New York improved to 37-16-3.

Rangers starting goalie Igor Shesterkin made a whopping 41 saves for a hard-fought win.

The Stars’ starting lineup featured Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Joe Pavelski, Thomas Harley, Jason Robertson, and Scott Wedgewood. Wedgewood made 23 saves in a losing effort.

Stars backup goalie Scott Wedgewood apparently thought he had the puck in his hand, but he didn’t appear to do so. Adam Fox fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net for a 1-0 lead at 7:45 of the first period. Artemi Panarin and Ryan Lindgren collected the assists on Fox’s ninth of the season.

Adam Fox was called for holding against Jamie Benn at 18:37 of the first period. The Stars went on the power play but trailed 1-0 to the Rangers at the end of the first. Dallas outshot New York 10-6 after the opening 20 minutes.

The Stars started the second period with 37 seconds left on the power play, but they were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. Dallas had chances and close calls, but the Rangers took the lead when Kaapo Kakko blasted a snap shot to make it a 2-0 game at 8:23 of the second period.

The Stars wasted no time cutting the Rangers’ lead in half, 2-1 after Vincent Trocheck was called for tripping against Esa Lindell at 7:44 of the second period. Miro Heiskanen, also known as the “new dad,” capitalized on the man advantage with a wrist shot for a power-play goal at 9:10 of the second. Jamie Benn and Joe Pavelski collected the assists on Heiskanen’s seventh of the season.

The Stars trailed 2-1 to the Rangers at the end of two periods. Dallas outshot New York 24-20 through 40 minutes.

The Stars pulled their goalie for an extra attacker for the final two minutes of the third period. The Stars’ decision didn’t work in their favor, as the Rangers had the last word. Vincent Trocheck fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net to score an empty-net goal that extended the Rangers’ lead to 3-1 at 18:19 of the third. Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad collected the assists on Trocheck’s 19th of the season.

The Stars lost 3-1 to the Rangers in regulation. Dallas outshot New York 42-26 after 60 minutes.
