Washington Capitals forward Hendrix Lapierre joined the world of sports business by investing in DC Power Football Club, a professional women’s soccer team. The club is one of the inaugural teams of the USL Super League that has made waves with eight teams spread across the country. Lapierre joins other athletic talent such as WNBA star Angel Reese and Washington Nationals player Josiah Gray as part of the ownership panel of DC Power.

The football team’s president and co-owner Jordan Stuart spoke highly of Lapierre, stating, “he joins an ownership group…with strong local ties and a passion for creating more career opportunities within pro sports – as he pursues a Stanley Cup he will crossover to help build a legacy within women’s football.” We are just starting to see a large uptick in viewership and support of women’s sports, especially as leagues such as the Professional Women’s Hockey League and USL Super League are beginning to take shape. Hendrix Lapierre is coming onto the scene at just the right time to make a big impact in the world of women’s sports. He expressed his desire to be able to stay involved in sports even after his eventual retirement from professional hockey while speaking with media outlet RMNB, adding, “I want to know more people and get connections and stuff like that. So super excited to get involved in DC sports. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out, but it’s just a little something to start.”

Lapierre had originally intended to invest in Loudon United FC, DC United’s minor league partner. However, after meeting with a financial planner, he decided to allocate his funds to the women’s team. Hendrix Lapierre stated that while he is not currently a soccer fan, he hopes he can become one and found the investment to be “a great opportunity for me to do something and support a women’s sport in the DC area”.

Hendrix Lapierre is quickly cementing himself as a superstar in Washington and is likely to secure a permanent spot on the team during training camp as he enters the final year of his entry-level contract. In 2023-2024, he tallied 22 points in 51 games with the Washington Capitals and was named the Calder Cup Playoffs MVP as he notched 22 points in 20 games with the Hershey Bears.

It is unclear how directly involved Hendrix Lapierre will be with DC Power FC, however, his support will help them grow and find their footing in the District. Tickets to home matches can be purchased on the team’s website, with the first home match being held on September 13th.
