Idaho Steelheads Defenseman Signs Overseas in Norway

Idaho Steelheads defenseman Joe Gatenby has signed to play in Hamar, Norway, with Storhamar of the Norway League for the 2024-25 season.

Collegiate Career

Joe Gatenby started his collegiate career in the 2018-19 season playing at the University of New Brunswick. During his four seasons at the University of New Brunswick, Gatenby played in 87 games, where he had nine goals and 34 assists for 43 points. He had 66 penalty minutes and an incredible plus/minus of +61. While at the University of New Brunswick, Gatenby played in 15 playoff games, where he had zero goals and five assists for five points. He had two penalty minutes and a plus/minus of +3. After finishing his collegiate career in the 2021-22 season, Gatenby signed to play with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in the ECHL.

ECHL Career

After signing with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits towards the end of the 2021-22 season, Gatenby did not play in any regular season games, but he did play in six playoff games with the Swamp Rabbits, where he had one goal and one assist for 2 points. He had eight penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -1. Gatenby stayed with the Swamp Rabbits for the 2022-23 season and played in 67 games, where he had seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points. He had 22 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of +24. He got to play in the playoffs with the Swamp Rabbits again, playing in four games where he had one goal and zero assists for one point. He had six penalty minutes and a plus/minus of 0.

After playing with the Swamp Rabbits for a little over a season, Gatenby had a bit of a crazy 2023-24 season playing on four different teams. Gatenby played in nine games with the Fort Wayne Komets, 23 games with the Allen Americans, 30 games with the Newfoundland Growlers, and three games with the Idaho Steelheads. Through Gatenby’s 65 games played in the 2023-24 season, he had six goals and 13 assists for 19 points. He had 29 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -10. Gatenby then played in two playoff games with the Idaho Steelheads, where he did not register a point and had two penalty minutes with a plus/minus of +2.
