The Winnipeg Jets have recalled five players from the Manitoba Moose ahead of game five at Canada Life Centre vs the St. Louis Blues.
This comes a couple of weeks after the Jets’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Manitoba Moose’s season came to an end.
Defensemen Dylan Coghlan, Isaak Phillips, and Elias Salomonsson were the blueline reinforcements, while Axel Jonsson-Fjallby and Mason Shaw were the reinforcements upfront. They join Moose teammates Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Dominic Toninato, who have already been up with the Jets for some time now.
It is unlikely that any of the five players will get a game in the series, especially at such a crucial point in the series, but that remains to be seen as of right now.
It is also important to note that the five players are a part of Winnipeg’s taxi squad for the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
They will practice and travel with Winnipeg and be available for game action if necessary.
Jonsson-Fjallby, Shaw, Salomonsson and Phillips did not make an appearance for the Jets in the 2024-25 season. Though it is worth noting that Phillips was a mid-season trade acquisition from Chicago for Dmitry Kuzmin.
For Jonsson-Fjallby, it was his first season without an NHL appearance since 2020-21. At 27 years old, one has to wonder if the pending unrestricted free agent will remain with the organization beyond the Jets’ playoff run.
Shaw is playing his first professional season outside of Minnesota. He was not tendered a qualifying offer last summer after recovering from a fourth ACL surgery. He was offered a two-way deal with Winnipeg in the offseason and had to clear waivers to report to the Manitoba Moose. Shaw, 26, is eligible for salary arbitration this summer and will likely be re-signed by Winnipeg, as he was a leader for the Moose as an alternate captain.
Coghlan skated in six games in December and January after being a healthy scratch for two months. He’s one year removed from his season where he led the AHL in goals by a defenseman, and he’s currently considered the 10th defenseman on the Winnipeg Jets depth chart.
Phillips was acquired via trade in January, but he did appear in some NHL games with the Blackhawks this season. Like Shaw, Phillips is eligible for salary arbitration this offseason. Phillips contributed to the Moose’s defensive core as a strong shutdown defenseman, but had a decent offensive contribution with eight points (3G, 5A) in 39 games for the Moose.
Salomonsson has yet to make his NHL debut, but is considered Winnipeg’s top prospect right now. At 20 years old, Salomonsson adjusted well to his first season in North America, where he played big minutes and finished second among defensemen in scoring. It is expected that Salomonsson will at least make his NHL debut within the next 12 months.
