John Tortorella, who will soon kick off his third season coaching the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers this fall, and David Quinn who will start as an assistant coach for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2024-25 season, have both been selected as assistant coaches for the 2025 U.S. Men’s National Team.
Team USA is set to join the 4 Nations Face-Off taking place from February 12 to 20, 2025, in Montreal and Boston. Team USA will be competing against Team Sweden, Team Canada, and Team Finland and each of the four teams have already made their initial six player selections over the course of this summer, with more expected in the months ahead.
John Tortorella, Assistant Coach, TEAM USA
With 742 wins over 22 NHL seasons, John Tortorella had guided the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first Stanley Cup in 2004. His extensive experience places him third among active NHL coaches in games coached and fourth in total wins. His contributions to USA Hockey include coaching various national teams in prestigious events such as the World Cup of Hockey and the IIHF Men’s World Championship. Tortorella, while coaching the Flyers for two seasons, has a record of 69 wins, 71 losses, and 24 ties. A significant milestone in his coaching career was reaching his 738th win in March 2023, a feat that surpassed Darryl Sutter’s record.
Tortorella’s participation in 4 Nations will mark Tortorella’s fifth time coaching for USA Hockey, adding to his impressive coaching career. He is currently the ninth winningest coach in NHL history and the second highest among US-born coaches. In recent international events, Tortorella notably led Team USA as head coach in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, which won the silver medal. Additionally, he served as head coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2008 IIHF Men’s World Championship and as an associate coach for the U.S. in the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Championship.
David Quinn, Assistant Coach, TEAM USA
David Quinn has accumulated over three decades of coaching experience across various levels, from junior to professional, both domestically and internationally. In the NHL, Quinn has worked with four different teams, notably the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he is set to begin his tenure as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season. He has previously held head coaching positions with the New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks, as well as serving as an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche.
Quinn’s coaching journey includes leading USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program for two seasons (2002-2004). During his time at the NTDP, he led the U.S. to victory in several championships including the 2002 Four Nations Tournament, the 2003 Four Nations Cup, and the 2004 Vlad Dzurilla Four Nations Tournament. His outstanding achievements earned him the title of the 2003 USA Hockey Developmental Coach of the Year.
Quinn also served as the head coach at his alma mater, Boston University, from 2013 to 2018. Under his guidance, the Terriers made four NCAA tournament appearances, secured two Hockey East regular-season titles, and clinched two Hockey East tournament championships.
Quinn has coaching experience with the Colorado Avalanche (2012-2013) and the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters (2009-2012). While coaching the Lake Erie Monsters, he led the team to their first-ever playoff appearance in the 2010-2011 season. For five seasons (2004-09), he served as the associate head coach at Boston University, contributing to the Terriers’ NCAA national title win in 2009. Quinn has also held coaching positions at Northeastern (1995-96) and Nebraska-Omaha (1996-2002) in collegiate sports.
Tortorella and Quinn have joined Head Coach Mike Sullivan and Assistant Coach John Hynes, forming a group of four coaches with a combined coaching experience of 26 major international tournaments. Among them, they have served as either head coaches or assistant coaches for U.S. teams in prestigious events such as the IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship, IIHF World Junior Championship, IIHF Women’s World Championship, IIHF Men’s World Championship, the World Cup of Hockey, and the Olympic Winter Games.
The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament is poised to take center stage in the hockey world this coming winter, especially as the NHL season begins and the teams continue to make roster announcements.
