Erik Karlsson Wins Third Career Norris Trophy

The 2023 NHL awards have been decided, and for the third time, San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson has won the James Norris Memorial Trophy.

The other two James Norris Memorial Trophy nominees were a third-place nominee for Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar and a second-place nominee for New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox.

Karlsson recorded a career-high in goals (25), assists (76), and points (101) with the Sharks. Karlsson’s 101-point season is the sixth time an NHL defenseman has recorded 100 points and the first since Brian Leetch in 1991-92.

Erik Karlsson has not won the James Norris Memorial Trophy since 2014-15 and has not been a candidate since the 2016-17 season.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy is given to the best defenseman in the NHL, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
