Kyle Clifford Announces Retirement

This morning, 34-year-old forward Kyle Clifford announced his retirement. This past season, he played in 17 games with the Toronto Marlies, recording eight points on four goals and four assists. He was a plus-five with a game-winning goal and 32 penalty minutes.

Kyle Clifford’s Playing Career

First Half

The Los Angeles Kings drafted Clifford 35th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Before joining the Kings, he spent three seasons with the Barrie Colts of the OHL. In 184 games, he had 100 points on 45 goals and 55 assists. He was a +15 with 327 penalty minutes. He then joined the Manchester Monarchs in 2009-10. Clifford didn’t play in any regular season games but played in seven Calder Cup Playoff games, recording two assists, and he was a plus-one with 12 penalty minutes.

Clifford then spent ten seasons with the Kings, playing in 660 games. He recorded 129 points on 60 goals and 69 assists. Clifford was a -12 with six game-winning goals and 819 penalty minutes. He won two Stanley Cups with the Kings, playing in 55 games over six seasons in the playoffs with Los Angeles. He had 15 points on four goals and 11 assists. Clifford was a minus-seven with a game-winning goal and 62 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 11 games with the Ontario Reign, nine of those in 2012-13 when they were in the ECHL, the other two came in 2015-16 when they were in the AHL. In those 11 games, he had seven points on four goals and three assists. He was a plus-two with four penalty minutes.

Second Half

In 2019-20, the Kings traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs. he appeared in 16 games, recording three points on a goal and two assists. He was a minus-one with 23 penalty minutes. Clifford then signed with the St. Louis Blues, appearing in 52 games, recording eight points on four goals and four assists. He was a minus-six with 30 penalty minutes.

The Blues traded Clifford to the Maple Leafs, where he played in 25 games, recording four points on a goal and three assists. He was a minus-three with 33 penalty minutes. Clifford also appeared in 125 AHL games with the Marlies, recording 59 points on 25 goals and 34 assists. He was a plus-nine with three power-play goals, two game-winning goals, and 256 penalty minutes. In ten Calder Cup Playoff games, he had 12 points on five goals and seven assists. He was a plus-three with 36 penalty minutes.

Kyle Clifford Full Career

Clifford appeared in 753 career NHL games, recording 144 points on 66 goals and 78 assists. He was a -22 with 905 penalty minutes, a power-play goal, and six game-winning goals. In 65 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, he had 16 points on four goals and 12 assists. He was a minus-six with a game-winning goal and 77 penalty minutes. Clifford appeared in 127 career AHL games, recording 59 points on 25 goals and 34 assists. He was a plus-nine with three power-play goals, two game-winning goals, and 258 penalty minutes. In 17 Calder Cup Playoff games, he had 14 points on five goals and nine assists. He was a plus-four with a power-play goal and 48 penalty minutes.
