Players to Keep an Eye On
Erik Portillo, who recently signed a two-year extension with the Kings earlier last month, will be in training camp. The 24-year-old Swedish goaltender has had a lot of eyes on him, as the current Kings’ goalie core — consisting of Darcy Kuemper, David Rittich, and Phoenix Copley — has serious skepticism regarding its efficiency. Although it is possible for him to make an NHL debut during next season, he will still likely play the majority of the season for Ontario.
Brandt Clarke has had an impressive career so far in the Kings’ franchise as a bottom defenseman. He performed very well during the recent Rookie Faceoff with defensive coverage and positioning, along with demonstrating leadership skills. The 21-year-old has showed excellent offensive skills with the Reign as a d-man, and the Kings will likely give him more ice time during next season.
Akil Thomas, a player who really impressed the Kings’ coaching staff and Rob Blake, will be front and center during training camp and the upcoming season. The 24-year-old racked up three goals and one assist in seven consecutive games for the Kings last season. His tenacity, youthful ambition, and skill will definitely help him secure a bottom-six spot.
Tanner Jeannot has experienced a career full of highs and lows, with injuries repeatedly setting him back. However, after being traded to the Kings by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the big-bodied left-winger will have the chance to redeem himself and reclaim his prime years in the NHL on the bottom-six lines and penalty-killing units.
The Kings will have six preseason games slated within training camp. The first game begins on Sept. 23 against the new Utah Hockey Club; the second is on Sept. 25 against the Las Vegas Golden Knights; the third is on Sept. 28 against the Anaheim Ducks in LA; the fourth is slated against the Ducks again, but in Anaheim; the fifth is against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 3 in Ontario, California; and the final game is against the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, on Oct. 5 in LA.
The Kings’ training camp will open on Sept. 19 at the Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo, California and end on Sept. 25, with six preseason occurring during and after it.
