Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson was named the recipient of the 2025 Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year. Hutson received 165 of the 191 first-place votes. Calgary Flames Goaltender Dustin Wolf and San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini rounded out the top three vote getters.

Lane Hutson, 21, had an incredible rookie year for Montreal, putting up six goals and 60 assists for 66 points while playing in all 82 games. He would add five assists in five games during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The North Barrington, Illinois native led all rookies in assists (60), points (66), PP assists (25), and PP points (26). Hutson also led all rookies in ice time per game (22:44). He was one of two rookies who played in all 82 games this season, along with the Anaheim Ducks forward Cutter Gauthier. Hutson becomes the fifth active defenseman to have won the Calder, joining Tyler Myers, Aaron Ekblad, Cale Makar, and Moritz Seider.

“To win rookie of the year award, I just feel really fortunate” Hutson said at the surprise party which was held at The Wild Onion Pub & Brewery in Lake Barrington, Illinois. “I’m lucky to be part of the Montreal Canadiens and be a part of such a great support system with all my friends and family.”

The 21-year-old defenseman would also shatter franchise records for the Canadiens. His 60 assists are a franchise record for any rookie. He becomes the seventh player in Canadiens history to win the Calder Trophy and the first since Ken Dryden in 1972. Three of the seven players from Montreal who have won the award are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
