Laurent Brossoit Linked to Toronto Maple Leafs

Laurent Brossoit with the Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Laurent Brossoit has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs recently. Per James Mirtle of The Athletic, there’s mutual interest between Brossoit and the Maple Leafs.

Current Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has been on the hunt for a bonafide number-one goaltender. There’s nobody of that stature available via free agency, only in the trade market. Treliving will certainly have a hard time trying to bring in Jacob Markstrom or Linus Ullmark.

The Toronto Maple Leafs remain very high on Joseph Woll, and for good reason. Woll is in the final year of a three-year, $766,667 contract which is below league minimum currently. Woll will be a restricted free agent (RFA) with arbitration rights once his contract expires at the end of the season.

With the Leafs seemingly having a rotating door for goalies coming off and going on the injured list, finding some stability is necessary.

Brossoit was a key part of the Jets’ strong regular season performance and will look to translate that into a shiny new contract.

The 31-year-old posted a 2.00 goals against average (GAA) and a 0.927 save percentage (SV%) across 23 games for the Jets in the 2023-24 season. Brossoit signed and returned as an unrestricted free agent in Winnipeg after he left Winnipeg to go to the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2021 off-season. Brossoit won the Stanley Cup with the 2022-23 Golden Knights where they eliminated the Jets in five games.

Brossoit is a proven backup who can step up to the challenge when needed. He’s played in two Canadian markets (Edmonton and Winnipeg) over his career, so adding Toronto to that list shouldn’t be a bigger challenge.

It is expected that Brossoit is looking for another short-term contract, likely around two or three years. Teams like Toronto need proven goaltending experience, Brossoit fits the bill. If they can pay to Brossoit’s asking price and contract length, this will be a great fit for both teams.
