If you are a New York Rangers fan, Thursday, June 12, will go down as a very sad day for both you and the franchise you root for.
Chris Kreider, the team’s longest-tenured player, signed off on a trade to the Anaheim Ducks. According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Blueshirts will receive Ducks prospect Carey Terrance and the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2025 third-round pick, while the Ducks will receive Kreider and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post posted earlier on Twitter that the team’s longest-tenured player, Chris Kreider, had signed off on a trade that will see him go to the Anaheim Ducks. Earlier this week, Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli reported that the teams were in discussions on a deal that would see the Ducks acquire Kreider in exchange for prospect Carey Terrance.
With the deal finally completed, Kreider’s time as a Ranger has come to an end. In his 13 years as a Ranger, Kreider did it all for the franchise.
For starters, Kreider knew how to put the puck in the net. Kreider scored 326 goals in the regular season for the Rangers, which puts him third all-time on the franchise list.
Not only did he score a lot of goals in the regular season, but he also put the puck in the net with regularity in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He currently leads the franchise with 48 goals in the postseason.
Secondly, Kreider was known for coming up big when his team needed it the most. In Game 6 of the second round between the Rangers and Hurricanes last season, the Blueshirts entered the third period down 3-1 until Kreider went out and scored a natural hat trick to help the team win the game and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in three seasons.
Kreider was also a solid offensive presence for the franchise in his 13 years with the club. Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Journal News and USA Today highlighted the following when it came to Kreider’s offensive output as a member of the Rangers:
- 326 goals (third in franchise history)
- 582 points (tenth in franchise history)
- 48 playoff goals (first in franchise history)
- 50 game-winning goals (second in franchise history)
- 116 power play goals (tied for first in franchise history)
- 13 shorthanded goals (fourth in franchise history)
- 2,160 shots (fifth in franchise history)
Lastly, Kreider was a Ranger through and through. Long-time Ranger great and Hockey Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert, was known as “Mr. Ranger” as he was a player who not only contributed on the ice, but contributed in a positive manner off the ice as well.
Kreider fit “Mr. Ranger” to a “t”. He worked hard on the ice and off the ice, he was a leader on and off the ice, and he was someone who made a lot of contributions to the community.
There is no doubt that Kreider is going to be missed by the franchise and their fans. It will certainly be emotional for both Kreider and the fans when he makes his return to Madison Square Garden wearing a Ducks jersey instead of a Rangers jersey.
For now, all Rangers fans can do is wish him the best and thank him for everything that he did for their favorite franchise.
