
The Maine Mariners announced the signing of defenseman Nate Schweitzer on Thursday. Schweitzer joins the team from NCAA Division I Lake Superior State University.
A 23-year-old served as captain of Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in high school for two seasons.
During his time at BSM, Schweitzer played for the US-17 National team. He assisted the team in having a 4-2 record that year (2017).
Then, he would go on to play for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League. During his time with the Stampede, he registered 23 points, racking in 8 goals and 15 assists.
He began his collegiate career at Colorado College. Schweitzer played two seasons (2021-2023). In his first season, within 31 games, Schweitzer scored his first career point with a goal and an assist in an 8-1 win over Air Force. He also notched a goal and an assist in a 5-4 loss to Western Michigan, and added an assist in a game at Omaha.
Schweitzer scored a career-high with four shots during a game against Western Michigan. He was also recognized as a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete by the NCHC and selected for the all-academic team.
His sophomore year saw 11 games, recording his only point of the season with an assist against Omaha. Registered a career-high +3 rating in the game against the Mavericks. Logged three shots in the season opener against UAA and totaled 10 shots on the year. Earned NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honors and was named to the all-academic team for the second consecutive season.
He then transferred to NCAA Division I, playing for Lake Superior State for his final two years. With Lake Superior, he tallied 13 points (3G, 10A) his first year and 18 (3G,15A) his senior year. Schweitzer led Lake Superior State’s defensemen in scoring, registering 18 points in 34 games.
Schweitzer will join the Mariners for their series versus the Adirondack Thunder on Friday, March 14th, and Saturday, March 15th, at Cool Insuring Arena.
