Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin announced that the Wild have traded forward Nic Petan to the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Turner Elson. Petan has played 170 NHL games over nine seasons. He has 35 points during his career (seven goals and 28 assists).
Petan played mostly for the Iowa Wild this season, although he did play seven games with Minnesota. During his season in Iowa, Petan has put up 40 points in 44 games (12 goals and 28 assists).
Elson was undrafted and most recently spent the 2022-23 and the first part of the 2023-24 season with the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack team. During 38 games that he has played this season, Elson has 12 points, including five goals and, seven assists, and 23 penalty minutes. Overall, he has played in 579 AHL games and recorded 263 points (117 goals and 146 assists) and 433 penalty minutes.
Elson has played a total of three games in the NHL, one with the Calgary Flames during the 2015-26 season and two with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2021-22 season. During those three games, he has managed to score one assist.
This is the first time that Elson has been traded, having signed as a free agent with four teams, including the Flames, the Red Wings, the Colorado Avalanche, and most recently, the Rangers. Elson is on the second year of a two-year contract with a cap hit of $762,500 and a minimum guaranteed salary of $225k. He will report to the Iowa Wild, Minnesota’s AHL affiliate team.
