The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired forward Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Nicolas Roy.
The trade is believed to be one-for-one.
The deal includes Mitch Marner signing an eight-year contract extension worth an average annual value worth $12 million per season.
The contract carries a full no-movement clause throughout the full eight-year deal and will expire at the end of the 2032-33 season.
Marner was drafted fourth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He would spend one final season with the London Knights, capped off by winning the 2016 OHL Championship and later the Memorial Cup.
The 28-year-old has spent the past nine seasons in Toronto, where he’s enjoyed several high-scoring seasons, including a 102-point (27G, 75A) season in 2024-25. Marner has 741 points (221G, 520A) in 657 career NHL games and has added 63 points (13G, 50A) in 70 career NHL playoff games.
The Markham, Ontario-born forward has been the centre of attention this offseason after his previous six-year contract expired following the end of the 2024-25 season and the Leafs’ elimination from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Given the hostility from the fans toward Marner, it is no surprise that he would be looking to move to a different market.
Brad Treliving, now in his second big sign-and-trade, this time with a pending unrestricted free agent, has done a good job of recouping assets when needed.
Marner gets a fresh start in the bright lights of Las Vegas, and the Toronto Maple Leafs can now look toward replacing the top talent, either internally or externally.
