Montreal Canadiens Announce Mike Matheson As Alternate Captain

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that Mike Matheson has been named an alternate captain as Brendan Gallagher keeps the “A” on his sweater for the ninth straight season, and Nick Suzuki heads into his second season as the Canadiens captain. Matheson replaces Joel Edmundson, who was traded by the Canadiens to Washington on July 1st in exchange for draft picks. Matheson was acquired by the Habs in 2022 in the trade that sent Jeff Petry to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Matheson also spent time last season wearing the “A”. The Quebec Native is entering his ninth season in the league as he spent time with the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and, most recently, the Montreal Canadiens. He has put up 14 goals and 57 assists for 71 points in 112 games and added a goal and an assist in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff Games. The last time Matheson wore a letter was during his senior season at Boston College when he captained the Eagles.

Heading into next season, Matheson is expected to play in the top four on the Canadiens blueline, featuring many young defencemen, including Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, and Arber Xhekaj. Having an experienced guy like Matheson, who is wearing a letter, will be a huge factor in helping the younger guys continue to develop.
