The Montreal Canadiens have announced that goaltender Samuel Montembeault will miss Game 4 vs. the Washington Capitals with a lower-body injury. He’s considered day to day, and didn’t take the morning skate. Montembault appeared to get hurt at the 4:30 mark of the second period after making a left pad save on Ryan Leonard. He stayed in the game until the 11:21 mark, when there was a media timeout. Jakub Dobes took over the Montreal net. The 28-year-old goaltender went 31-24-7 with a 2.82 GAA, .902SV%, and four shutouts in 62 games during the regular season. Samuel Montembeault is 0-2 with a 2.76 GAA and .906SV% in three games during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This is a huge loss for Montreal, as Montembeault has been the backbone of the Canadiens all season.

What Does This Mean For Montreal Without Samuel Montembeault?

Montreal will now turn to Jakub Dobes between the pipes with Montembeault out of the lineup. Dobes,23, made his NHL debut this season with Montreal, going 7-4-3 with a 2.74 GAA, .909SV%, and one shutout. He would make seven saves in 28:21 of playing time in Game 3 for his first Stanley Cup Playoff victory. The Czech goaltender allowed just two goals in his final two starts during the regular season. Montreal has called up Cayden Primeau from the Laval Rocket to serve as Dobes backup. Primeau began the year as Montreal’s backup. He went 2-3-1 with a 4.70 GAA, .836SV% in 11 starts before being sent down to Laval. The 25-year-old goaltender has found his game in Laval, going 21-2-3 with a 1.96 GAA, .927 SV%, and two shutouts in 26 games.
