Montreal Canadiens Trade Cayden Primeau To Carolina Hurricanes

The Montreal Canadiens have traded the negotiating rights to goaltender Cayden Primeau to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2026. Primeau, 25, split last season between the Laval Rocket and the Canadiens. In 11 games in Montreal, he struggled, going 2-3-1 with a 4.70 GAA and .836SV%. During his time in Laval, he played in 26 games, posting a 21-2-3 record with a 1.96 GAA, a .927 SV%, and two shutouts. He went 3-4 with a 3.27 GAA, .878SV%, and one shutout in eight games during the Calder Cup Playoffs.

There is no doubt that after six seasons in the Canadiens organization, Cayden Primeau needed a change of scenery. In 55 games at the NHL level, he had a record of 13-23-7 with a 3.77 GAA, .884SV%, and two shutouts, and never seemed to find his game while at the NHL level. Montreal has a ton of young goaltenders in its system, with Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler. They also have Samuel Montembault locked up until the end of the 2026-27 season.

A Fresh Start For Primeau In Carolina

A new organization will give the 25-year-old goaltender a fresh start and a chance to revitalize his career. Carolina has their tandem set for next season with Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov. Andersen signed a one-year deal, but has had his issues with injuries in the past. However, they don’t have much at the AHL level with Ruslan Khazheyev and Nikita Quapp as the only two other goaltenders currently signed to contracts. Dustin Tokarski and Spencer Martin are both UFAs heading into July 1st. It will be interesting to see how the Canes decide to use their new goaltender next season.
