New Jersey Devils Re-Sign Jake Allen

New Jersey Devils/NHL

The New Jersey Devils have re-signed goaltender Jake Allen to a five-year extension, with an AAV of $1.8M. There’s no doubt this is a solid deal for the Devils, getting a goalie like Allen for under $2M per for a guy who will be splitting the net with Jacob Markstrom. In his first full season with the Devils, Allen went 13-16-1 with a 2.66 GAA, .908SV%, and four shutouts. He went 6-6-1 with a 3.11 GAA and .900SV% in 13 games with New Jersey during the 2023-24 season after being acquired from Montreal. New Jersey will now keep the same goalie tandem they had last season, with Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen.

Prior to being traded to New Jersey, Allen had spent time with the St.Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens. In 460 career games, he’s put up a record of 208-184-43 with a 2.76 GAA, .907SV%, and 28 shutouts. Allen has also played in 29 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. In those 29 games he has an 11-12 record with a 2.06 GAA and .926SV%. He was a part of the St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup Championship team in 2019.

What This Means for the Devils Moving Forward

The move now allows the Devils at least another year to continue to develop some of their younger goaltenders. Nico Daws will see another season down with the Utica Comets after playing 34 games last year, going 11-20-3 with a 3.16 GAA, .893SV%, and one shutout. It will be interesting to see who serves as the other goalie in Utica, with Isaac Poulter not being given a qualifying offer by the Devils. It wouldn’t be a shock to see New Jersey sign one more goaltender this offseason.
