New York Rangers Activate Goalie for Tonight

The New York Rangers will face the New Jersey Devils tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY. The Rangers lost their last game 5-4 in overtime to the Dallas Stars. It has been a disappointing season for the defending President’s Trophy winners. A season with high expectations sees the Rangers in seventh in the Metropolitan Division. They are also 14th in the Eastern Conference trailing the final playoff spot by four points. Tonight, they will get a key piece back as Igor Shesterkin is being activated off of the injured reserve. He will get the start tonight likely against probable start Jacob Markstrom for the Devils.

Igor Shesterkin

Shesterkin was drafted with the 118th overall pick by the Rangers in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He made his debut on January 7, 2020, stopping 29 of 32 shots and picking up a win. He went 10-2-0 with a 2.52 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage that season. Shesterkin is 146-74-18 in his career with a .919 save percentage and a 2.50 goals-against average. He has finished in the top five in Vezina voting twice in his six seasons. He would win the Vezina in 2021-22.

Shesterkin went 36-13-4 with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage that season. This season in 27 starts he is 11-15-1 with a 3.10 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. It’s his highest goals-against average and his lowest save percentage of his career. He signed a contract extension on December 8th for eight-year and $92 million. He will look to get the Rangers back on track and get them into the playoffs for the 2024-25 season.
