The New York Rangers are struggling through a seven-game losing streak and looking for answers. On Friday, one of those answers might be in the works as the team announced that defenseman Jacob Trouba had been scratched ahead of Friday’s game against Pittsburgh for what the team termed “roster management reasons”. Trouba is one of the many Rangers who have been discussed in trade rumors in the past couple of weeks. Several media outlets are reporting that Trouba could either be traded or placed on waivers at 2 pm eastern time.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman had reported just before Thanksgiving that General Manager Chris Drury was “interested in making moves and shaking up the roster.” Friedman mentioned Trouba and Chris Kreider as two names who could be considered. The 30-year-old Trouba is in the sixth year of a seven-year, $56-million contract. The deal includes a modified no-trade list that allows Trouba to block a move to 15 teams. Talk around the league is that the Rangers will place Trouba on waivers if he does not choose to waive his no-trade option for a team that the Rangers have chosen.
In 24 games this season, Trouba has six assists and is a minus-3. The 2012 first-round draft pick has recorded 73 goals and 242 assists in 315 regular season games. In the postseason, Trouba has registered four goals and 15 assists in 73 games. The Rochester, Michigan native won the Mark Messier Award last season for “Exhibiting Best Leadership”.
