The New York Rangers might be in a predicament with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. The restricted free agent will be looking for a raise higher than his current deal of $2,650,000 per season. The 26-year-old netminder played 33 games this past season with a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.92 and a save percentage of .898. However, Georgiev fared well in two postseason games with a 2.04 GAA and .932 save percentage and seems to have some interest around the league.
The Edmonton Oilers have been a team who has expressed some interest in Georgiev in the past and could use a replacement for Mike Smith, who struggled in the playoffs. The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup but defied the odds with inconsistent goaltending. A move could be in play for Georgiev’s services as Darcy Kuemper is an unrestricted free agent. The Toronto Maple Leafs also need goaltending as Jack Campbell is a free agent who is about to test the free agent market. The Vegas Golden Knights and New Jersey Devils are no longer interested in the former undrafted goalie.
Regardless of where Georgiev ends up, it will not be in New York. Igor Shesterkin is under contract for three more years at $5.67 million per season and is among the best goaltenders in the league. The Rangers will be looking for a low-cost option as a backup and could get a decent return in a trade for Georgiev.
