After two straight losses, Anthony Stolarz and the Maple Leafs shutout the Bruins at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday, November 5th. The Bruins had just broken a two-game losing streak when they shutout both the Philadelphia Flyers and Seattle Kraken. Toronto scored four goals on Jeremy Swayman and the Bruins – Morgan Rielly, Matthew Knies, William Nylander, and Steven Lorentz all scored those four goals to help the Maple Leafs secure a 4-0 shutout victory. Three of the four goals were power-play goals and the Leafs went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill, defeating Boston. The Bruins take on the Calgary Flames at TD Garden on Thursday, and the Maple Leafs host the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.

After a scoreless opening 20 – Morgan Rielly opened the scoring at 11:16 of the second period with his fourth goal of the season to put the Leafs in front 1-0 when John Tavares parked in front of the net as Rielly passed the puck to Mitch Marner from behind the net before heading to the front of the net… Marner went in, trying to find a lane, then swung it back to Rielly, who scored once he received Marner’s pass. William Nylander made it a 2-0 lead with another power-play goal when his pass to Matthew Knies from along the goal line near the left corner banked in off Brandon Carlo’s leg at the top of the crease at 10:02 of the second. Preserving Toronto’s two-goal lead, Anthony Stolarz slid to the right to stop a one-timer from Justin Brazeau on a 3-on-1.

Matthew Knies pushed it to 3-0 with yet again, a power-play goal, which had been their third goal on the man-advantage. He scored when he deflected a shot from William Nylander past Jeremy Swayman at the top of the crease with 5:47 remaining of the third period. Steven Lorentz struck Boston’s empty net not so long later for the 4-0 final.

Elias Lindholm on the loss, Leafs’ power-play, and trouble gaining entries over the blue line: “I think we have looks, we have some chances… sooner or later, it’s going to go our way. Obviously, it’s frustrating. Their PP won their game. It’s frustrating when our PP can’t win the game for us,” – “You can always be more connected and sometimes dump it in, and go from there… but we to figure this out.”

David Pastrnak on the loss, power-play, and the game overall: “It was a tough road today, but I feel like we’ve been right there for the most part of the game… Special teams obviously hurt us today and we didn’t do the job on the power-play, they did,” – “I think today we actually got in there quite alright. We won a couple of face-offs… The third period is the one that sticks to us the most. We had a tough time getting in and then we ended up taking penalties, made it 4-on-4, and didn’t create momentum.”

Mitch Marner on the 4-0 shutout victory, power-play, and Anthony Stolarz: “I thought we were really good with our puck play today. We were really good up the ice on the forecheck, drew a lot of penalties, and obviously, special teams came through tonight,” – “We talked about it – just throwing the puck to the net and good things happen… Great tip by Kniesy on the third one and a good seeing-eye shot by Will. I thought we moved the puck well, we had a lot of good opportunities, we had good entries, and made the most of it – Massive saves, a couple of massive backdoor saves. Stolie’s been doing this all year for us in the net so, big kudos to him. Definitely could have been a different game or different score without him.”

Notes:

– This was Anthony Stolarz’s first shutout with the Maple Leafs since he signed a two-year, $5 million contract as an unrestricted free agent ($2.5 million average annual value).

– Morgan Rielly recorded a goal and two assists, both William Nylander and Matthew Knies recorded a goal and an assist, and Mitch Marner picked up a pair of assists. … Marner extended his point streak to six games (one goal, eight assists).

– The Maple Leafs played without their captain, Auston Matthews, who is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

– The Maple Leafs were 3-for-7 on the power play, this being the first time this season that they have scored more than two power-play goals in a game. They are 14.1% (7-for-47) on the man-advantage this season.

– Jeremy Swayman made a total of 23 saves for Boston.

– Andrew Peeke left the game due to an upper-body injury at 11:24 of the first frame after taking a hit from Max Pacioretty along the boards. There had been no update after the game.

– Tyler Johnson, who signed a one-year $775,000 contract on Monday, had one shot on goal in 13:51 of ice time in his Boston debut. This had also been his first game of the season.

– David Pastrnak had four shots on goal and was minus-1 in 22:09 after he had been benched on Sunday for the third period.
